In June 2008, the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the devolved administrations for Wales and Northern Ireland have published a white paper called "Managing Radioactive Waste Safely: A framework for implementing Geological Disposal".

With this white paper, the UK government opens the debate on the possibility of hosting a geological disposal facility at some point in the future.

In November 2006, the World Nuclear Association stated that Russia is moving steadily forward with plans for a much expanded role of nuclear energy. This analyses provides a good overview of the past, present and future role of nuclear energy in Russia.

La France et les déchets radioactifs

La loi française sur la gestion durable des matières et des déchets radioactifs fut adopté par l'Assemblée nationale en juin 2006. Elle opte pour le stockage géologique comme solutions de référence. Un centre industriel devra être mis en exploitation en 2025. Elle fixe l'écheance de 2012 pour l'évaluation des perspectives industrielles d'un démonstrateur de transmutation. Le champ de la loi a été étendu à l'ensemble des déchets radioactifs.
